Spay/Neuter Help for Communities Without Access to This Vital Service
Across California, there are communities where affordable spay/neuter services are extremely limited—or where residents caring for community cats and abandoned animals have no meaningful local program to turn to.
But the animals do not stop reproducing because services are unavailable.
When prevention resources are missing, small rescues, volunteers, and ordinary community members step in. They trap community cats, transport them to clinics, pay for surgeries, feed colonies, rescue kittens, provide vaccinations and medical care, and respond when residents ask for help.
These are the people Animal Rescuers For Change (ARFC) wants to support.
Our mission includes helping rescues and communities with the practical resources that can prevent suffering before animals ever reach an overwhelmed shelter. Spay/neuter is one of the most important forms of that help.
Helping Community Cats in Antioch
ARFC has already provided financial assistance to Scruffy To Fluffy Cat Rescue to help spay and neuter community cats in Antioch.
According to community rescuers, Antioch residents currently have no municipal TNR or low-cost spay/neuter program available for their community cats. Yet the need has not disappeared. Instead, small, privately funded rescues and volunteers are stepping in to provide prevention services their community desperately needs.
Scruffy To Fluffy has already spayed and neutered more than 300 cats this year and rescued more than 80 kittens from these locations.
And the requests keep coming.
Residents contact them about unaltered neighborhood cats, abandoned cats, pregnant cats, feral colonies, and kittens already being born outside.
Think about the impact of those 300 surgeries. Every animal altered represents future litters that can be prevented—and fewer kittens eventually competing for already scarce rescue, foster, veterinary, and shelter resources.
ARFC has already contributed funds toward this work. How much more we can help will depend on how much we are able to raise.
Small Rescues Should Not Have to Carry This Alone
These organizations are not large institutions with enormous budgets. They are small nonprofits and grassroots rescuers stretching every dollar while responding to a problem far larger than any single organization can solve.
They buy food. They pay veterinary bills. They find appointments. They transport animals. They answer community pleas. They spend evenings and weekends trapping cats. They foster kittens in their own homes.
And then they do it again.
Small rescues with very limited funds are stepping up. Let's make sure they don't have to do it alone.
This is one of the reasons ARFC continues working toward substantially greater spay/neuter capacity in California. Community-wide animal population problems cannot sustainably depend upon a handful of volunteers and small nonprofits paying for prevention out of their own pockets.
But while longer-term solutions are being developed, animals need help today.
Helping the People Who Step Up
Our assistance is not limited to one rescue or one community.
We also want to support grassroots rescuers and community members like Gabriel and Jenny, who step forward when abandoned and stray animals have nowhere else to go.
Sometimes that help means food.
Sometimes it means spay/neuter.
Sometimes it means vaccinations or veterinary care.
Sometimes it means supplies or assistance caring for animals until a permanent solution can be found.
Five puppies who are safe today are a reminder of what can happen when people care enough to act.
But there are still pregnant mothers outside. There are still community cats producing litter after litter. There are still dogs on abandoned properties. There are still hungry animals waiting for somebody to notice them.
And behind many of these animals is a person saying:
“I can't leave them there. I have to do something.”
We want to be able to say:
“We will help you.”
