ACT NOW: Task Force to Address the Critical Issue of Animal Shelter Overpopulation in San Jose

Across the United States, shelters are facing a crisis of overcrowding, and unfortunately, our community is no exception. San Jose and surrounding areas are experiencing a surge in the homeless animals population.
It’s crucial that we come together to advocate for meaningful change within our local municipal shelter. Many changes are needed and will help improve the animals well being at the shelter as well as reduce the intake from illegal breeders and increase public spay-neuter support.
Enhancing Shelter Leadership and Organization: We are calling for immediate interventions to address the shelter operating at more than twice its intended capacity. Please implement necessary measures to increase resources and support, ensuring they can effectively manage and care for the animals in their care.
Hiring Specialized Staff: We believe it’s vital to bring in professionals who can oversee animal welfare, including sanitation, enrichment activities, and medical and behavioral outcomes.
Implementing New Legislation: We need stronger laws to prevent shelter overcapacity and the increasing number of abandoned pets in our community.
